Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts
Scenic Lake-View Gondola Rides, Mountain Biking,
Hiking, Skiing, Snowboarding, Snowshoeing, The List Goes On & On.
The beauty of South Shore Lake Tahoe is that its
natural environment provides for an incredible year-round playground
where the weather enhances each experience. The region’s three
highly rated resorts, Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood
Mountain Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe, serve as wildly
popular destinations for avid mountain resort skiers and riders who
thrive on challenging terrain and perfect snowpack. And, in the
summer, Heavenly and Kirkwood offer those with an adventurous spirit
big mountain fun with some of the best hiking in all of Lake Tahoe.
In addition to hiking, Kirkwood offers the only lift-serviced
mountain bike park this summer.
World-class Heavenly Mountain Resort leads all Lake Tahoe
resorts with a top-15 national ranking in SKI Magazine’s Top 50
Resorts in North America (October 2005), and the resort continues to
be one of the top five most visited snow sports resorts in the U.S.
Heavenly received SKI Magazine’s No. 1 vote for Scenery and received
top rankings for both Après Ski and Off-Mountain Activities.
Heavenly’s year-round attraction, the high-speed gondola, was
rated by SKI Magazine as one of the most scenic in the nation
(Summer 2004). As it rises from the heart of the Heavenly Village,
the gondola takes summer-time sightseers 2.4 miles up the resort’s
mountainside, offering shore-to-shore views of Lake Tahoe during the
17-minute scenic ride. Approximately two-thirds of the way up the
mountain, the gondola stops at the 14,000 square foot Observation
Deck. Covered picnic tables, built-in benches and high-powered
telescopes allow guests to stop and enjoy the views for as long as
they desire. Continuing to the top of the gondola, hiking trails
meander through the forests and the Adventure Peak Grill offers a
full barbeque menu for hungry hikers and sightseers. Routes vary
from 1.6 miles to just under four miles round-trip. In the winter,
it’s not all just skiing and snowboarding at Heavenly. Visitors who
would prefer to sled can ride the gondola to the top of the mountain
and cruise the tubing park for the afternoon. For more information
about year-round activities and events at Heavenly, log onto
www.skiheavenly.com.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort has garnered a national reputation
for its rugged and steep terrain, deep snow pack, extreme
expeditions and is ranked by USA Today as one of the Top 10 places
in North America to Learn to Ski with its family- and beginner-
friendly slopes. SKI Magazine recognized Kirkwood Mountain Resort
for the Country’s Best ‘Corn’ or Granular Snow (April 2006).
Kirkwood is also in the nation’s Top 10 in three categories
according to SKI Magazine for Snow, Terrain Variety and Challenge
(October 2005). Freeskier Magazine selected Kirkwood as a must in
the Top Road Trips (November 2005). The resort ranked No. 13 in
Value and continues to offer high caliber programs at affordable
prices. Timber Creek at Kirkwood features a variety of fall-line
runs that create a natural progression on which to learn.
Summer at Kirkwood brings the only lift-serviced mountain bike park
for 2006 at Lake Tahoe. The Mountain Bike Park begins lift
operations in early July and continues through Labor Day weekend. It
features two lifts (Chairs 1 and 2) and miles of beginner,
intermediate and advanced downhill trails. Bikers, hikers,
sight-seers, history buffs and many other outdoor adventure types
converge at Kirkwood where there’s a wealth of pristine hiking
trails for all levels along one of the most scenic highways in the
nation, highway 89. People come to admire the wildflowers and spot
wildlife on the thousands of acres of Mokelumne Wilderness with
endless miles of hiking trails in the national forest service land
surrounding the resort where inside Kirkwood approximately 13 miles
of hiking trails are available to explore. At the Kirkwood Corrals,
a scenic wilderness horseback and old-fashioned carriage or hay
rides in the warm weather are as essential as sleigh rides are in
the winter snow. For those not quite ready for climbing Mother
Nature, head to Kirkwood’s 30-foot Climbing Wall complete with a
straight surface, an incline and an overhang. For a list of events

Sierra-at-Tahoe was just voted No. 1 Best Ski Resort by Tahoe
Daily Tribune's "Best of Tahoe" Readers Poll. In February 2006,
Freeskier Magazine recognized the resort for the Top 18 Best Terrain
Parks as rated by the top 50 pro skiers. The resort also recently
ranked No. 7 for Best Pipe, No. 4 for Best Terrain Park, No. 7 in
its Must Ride – Top Best Places to Ride for 2006 and No. 7 for Best
Overall Snowboard Resort in a nationwide resort poll conducted by
Transworld Snowboarding.
Known for offering award-winning terrain parks and impeccable pipes,
this winter only resort offers The Circuit where they can hit
terrain parks and pipes the entire way across the mountain. For
those who are jib-phobic, the Progression Park, with boxes, jumps
and rails all located mere inches from the ground and in
non-intimidating fashion, is the perfect training ground for those
who have always wanted to test gravity, one inch at a time.
Sierra-at-Tahoe offers lessons on these mini freestyle terrain
features so that skiers/riders learn the proper technique when
getting started.
Sierra-at-Tahoe blends fun and learning in its new on-mountain
Family Adventure Zones, which were designed with kids in mind.
Recipient of the NSAA’s Silver Eagle Award for Environmental
Excellence, terrain features such as rollers, mini jumps and banked
turns keep children entertained, while signage and animated figures
educate them on local history and animal species. The interactive
displays allow children to climb in and out of tree houses, caves
and secret hideaways. Sound effects and smoke machines enhance the
experience. For more information about Sierra-at-Tahoe trails,
awards and events, log onto
