Indian Casinos in California's Wine Country
The first California wine maker was Padre Junipero
Serra who led the Spanish missionaries from Baja
north to Sonoma
between 1769 and 1823. The Franciscans were California's only
viticulturists for almost 60 years, producing wine for sacramental,
medicinal and table use from what was known as the Mission grape.
Commercial wine production began in the 1820s when Joseph Chapman
planted his first vineyard in the Los Angeles area. He was followed
a decade later by Jean Louis Vignes, a Frenchman who flourished in
the trade by planting choice vine cuttings sent from Europe. In 1843
George Yount began the serious cultivation of grapes in the Napa
Valley.
In 1861 a Hungarian nobleman realized the great potential of
California's rich soil and mild climate and was sent to Europe by
the governor of California to gather vines for experimentation.
Agoston returned with over 100,000 cuttings and triggered the great
modern expansion of the California wine industry in the Napa Valley
and other regions.

Located in southwestern Riverside County, Temecula
is California's only prominent American Viticultural Area south of
Los Angeles. For the adventurous wine lover, it's an ideal
destination for a short day trip from Los Angeles, Orange County,
Palm Springs or San Diego.
Temecula's fine, underrated wines taste especially good when sampled
at the winery. The region's tasting rooms and gift shops are open to
visitors year-round, and most wineries offer tours and, in some
cases, special wine-and-food tastings. Wine lovers can also savor
the local nectar at the area's many gourmet delis and upscale
restaurants or while enjoying panoramic vineyard views from one of
Temecula's many picnic areas. After a day of wine tasting, spend a
relaxing night in one of Temecula's excellent B&Bs or inns.
If you are leisurely wine taster, touring the wine
country, or on a grape mission don't miss visiting the many wineries
and vineyards this Wine Country Region has to offer. Don't overlook
the boutique wineries, or perhaps select a varietal and map your
day's travels based on locating the perfect Cabernet Franc, or
syrah, or . . .
Wineries, tasting rooms, and vineyards are all legislated by their
local governments and you will find appointments are necessary at
some, some limit the number of people allowed through their doors,
some charge to taste, some give away the glass, and others throw
parties all day. Be sure to peruse our listings to find the winery
that fits your itinerary.
