The park nestles in a little valley 2,400 feet above sea level with
open meadows and large valley oaks that once provided the native
Americans of this area with an ample supply of acorns. The 135-acre
park was created in 1968 and preserves a great outcropping of
marbleized limestone with some 1,185 mortar holes, the largest
collection of bedrock mortars in North America.

The monstrous, fifty-eight foot diameter Kennedy Tailing Wheels are
a one-of-a-kind creation. Although not built during the Gold Rush,
these huge wooden wheels were a direct result of a Gold Rush event
and are probably the most remembered artifacts of any visit to
Jackson today.
Monteverde Store Museum, Sutter Creek
The Monteverde Store Museum is a step back in time. It is as it was
in 1970 when the last of the original owners closed it for a few
days, and never reopened. Through the Visitors Center it can be
viewed most Mon. Thurs. Fri. Sat. and Sun. from 10-3 PM
