JAIL INMATE CHARGED WITH MURDER
KINGMAN – A Mohave County Jail inmate has been charged with the first degree
murder of fellow inmate Peter Brian Deakin.
Jereme Allen Cosby, 33, of West Valley City, Utah, appeared before Kingman
Justice of the Peace John Taylor Thursday evening, Nov. 10. Cosby, presently
being held without bond, will now face charges of first degree murder, a class-1
felony, in Superior Court.
Deakin, 37, of Kingman, was found dead Friday, Oct. 14, in the jail. At that
time, inmates in D-Pod cell were locked down for approximately 12 hours.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, an autopsy found that his death was due to
“blunt force trauma to the head and asphyxiation.”
Deakin had been incarcerated on Sept. 29 on one felony charge of probation
violation out of Mohave County Superior Court; a felony charge of failure to
register as a sex offender; a misdemeanor charge of assault/domestic violence;
and a misdemeanor warrant for interfering with judicial proceedings from Kingman
Justice Court.
Cosby, who has a lightning-bolt “SS” tattooed on his neck, is admittedly a
member of the Nazi Lowriders, a white supremist group out of California,
Detective Mike Stout said. Cosby was extradited from Salt Lake City on Oct. 7 on
a felony warrant out of Lake Havasu City for burglary, theft and trafficking in
stolen property.
“I am very proud of Detective Stout and his team who worked solid for the last
month solving this murder case,” Mohave County Sheriff Tom Sheahan said. “They
did a really good job. Deputy County Attorney Rick Lambert was a great help on
this from start to finish. This prosecutor worked hand-in-hand with the
detectives all the way through to Cosby’s confession.
“Investigating a crime that takes place behind bars can sometimes be more
difficult than one that takes place elsewhere,” Sheahan said. “Witnesses are
sometimes somewhat reluctant.
“Before we brought this case to the county attorney for formal charges, we
wanted to methodically put the evidence of this case together,” Sheahan said.
“We gathered physical and circumstantial evidence as well as witness statements
to develop our case,” Stout said.
“Within a period of time we had enough evidence to charge Mr. Cosby who, during
interviews, confessed to the murder,” Sheahan said.
According to the sheriff, this case is an illustration of the law enforcement
side to the present economic and population growth in Mohave County.
“We are getting a lot of new people in the county,” Sheahan said. “Most of them
are good citizens, but, unfortunately, not every new resident or visitor is a
law-abiding citizen. Growth has brought tremendous opportunities to our county
and also some of the worst elements of society to our area, as this case has
shown, and law enforcement has to deal with that. And, with the assistance of
the good people of Mohave County, we can handle it.”
According to Sheahan, the investigation is on-going and there is a possibility
of other inmates being charged.
